Pastor's Corner
MARCH 2007

But I don’t have the gift of evangelism! But I am scared! But I don’t know what to say! But I might lose a friend! But that’s why we pay the pastor, isn’t it? I just don’t think it’s all that important! After all, God is a loving God, isn’t He? He wouldn’t actually send someone to hell, would He?

Remember Moses? Read the first few chapters of Exodus and you will find God burning a bush, or actually not burning a bush, to get Moses’ attention. Once he did, God gave Moses his assignment. He was to go back to Egypt and lead God’s people out of slavery into freedom in the promised land. (You may know that the story of the Israelites leaving Egypt and going to the promised land is a picture of how God takes us from slavery to sin into freedom in Christ.) Actually, Moses is asked by God to be an evangelist. To tell the people the good news of freedom. Just like God asks us to tell our neighbors about Jesus.

What did Moses say to being the bearer of good news? He made excuses! Just like us. I’m a nobody. Why send me? They don’t know you, God! They won’t believe that God has actually spoken to me! But God, I can’t talk good. I won’t know what to say! Finally, after God had answers to all his excuses, Moses just tried to refuse. "Please, Lord, now send the message by whomever you will", which means, ‘Please use someone else." God answered every excuse, and finally, Moses had no choice but to go.

In the final analysis, Moses didn’t have to do much except show up. God did all the work. He turned Aaron’s staff into a snake and back into a staff. He turned the water into blood. He brought

the frogs, insects, locusts, darkness and boils. He later caused water to flow from the rock, brought manna every day for food, sent the pillars of cloud and fire, and even divided the sea. All Moses had to do was be there as God’s spokesman.

Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? God says to say something to our friend, neighbor, or associate about His Son, Jesus, and we begin making excuses, just like Moses. In reality, all God wants is for us to be there while He changes hearts. We start by developing friendships so that when God works, we are there.

In March, we will learn how simple it is to ‘Just Walk Across the Room’, and begin the process God can use to win our friends to Christ.

We make evangelism too complicated. We make it impossible for anyone to do except the ‘gifted’, when, in reality, there is no ‘gift of evangelism’. We are all charged with the responsibility and privilege of sharing Christ. True, there are gifted evangelists given to the church, but we are all called to win our FRAN’s, as Elmer Towns calls them. Friends, Relatives, Associates, and Neighbors.

You will learn how simple it is to be there when God works. The sermons will give instruction, and small group studies will give you the practical tools you need to be a confident Moses. It will change how you look at evangelism, and will change lives, too, while you watch God work. It’s exciting! Commit to being there every Sunday in March, and join on of the small training groups so you make the most of the opportunity.
